Children with phonological disorders struggle to follow normal sound patterns in speech, making predictable errors that can be hard to understand. Therapy helps them hear the difference between right and wrong sounds and practice saying them correctly.
Children with language disorders may have trouble understanding what they hear or read (receptive language disorder), and/or trouble using words, phrases, or sentences to communicate their needs and wants (expressive language disorder). Some children show both — difficulty with comprehension and expression (mixed receptive-expressive language disorder).
